The album cover is based on In the Wee Small Hours by Frank Sinatra. It is an illustration featuring a tired Tom Waits being observed by a blonde prostitute as he exits a neon-lit cocktail lounge late at night. All songs written and composed by Tom Waits. Side one 1. New Coat of Paint – Him and his girl are going out on the town to party/drink. 2. San Diego Serenade – You don’t realize what you have until it is gone. 3. Semi Suite – Woman is seeing a truck driver, she wants to tell him not to come back but she can’t find the courage to do it. 4. Shiver Me Timbers – Title is an expression used by pirates to express surprise. He name drops Martin Eden who was a character in a Jack London book who commits suicide by drowning, Tom said Martin Eden gonna be proud of me now. He is running away from his family and life basically. 5. Diamonds on My Windshield – He describes his journey driving, the title is referring to rain on his windshield. 6. (Looking for) The Heart of Saturday Night - The title song was written as a tribute to Jack Kerouac, a Beat Generation author. Narrates a Saturday night out on the town, from behind the wheel with his girl, cruising around looking for the best party or bar, he has some money from getting paid. Side two 1. Fumblin' with the Blues – He describes being in the bar, always being a loser and being burnt by past women and relationships but now he has his eye on another girl and he is asking her to be with him. 2. Please Call Me, Baby – They got in a fight and she left and is out walking in the rain. He talks about how they always fight and there has to be more but also wants her back. Great line - And I wish to God you'd leave me, Baby, I wish to God you'd stay, Life's so different than it is in your dreams. 3. Depot, Depot – Probably about Tom going to the Greyhound Bus Depot in Downtown LA as he mentioned in several interviews that he liked going there for the first couple of years he lived in LA, he just liked to hang out and observe. 4. Drunk on the Moon – He appears to be walking down the street and sharing what he is observing. 5. The Ghosts of Saturday Night (After Hours at Napoleone's Pizza House) - Captures the feeling of a quiet city, early on Sunday morning, after everyone’s gone home. Napoleone’s Pizza House, is a real restaurant in National City, California, where Waits worked as a teenager way back in 1965.
