Growing your own kitchen supplies (known as kitchen gardening or sustainable food gardens) is a smart way to save money while ensuring the food we consume is fresher and pesticide-free. Many kitchen ingredients can be regrown from cooking scraps or easily planted in small spaces using pots/polybags. Here are some of the easiest kitchen supplies to grow yourself: 1. Spices & Herbs (Quickest & Most Economical) This is the most commonly purchased group but is actually very easy to grow: Chili: Simply cut off the white part with the roots, then stick it in the soil or soak it in water. In a few days, new leaves will grow. Chili & Bird's Eye Chili: Take seeds from old/ripe chilies in the kitchen, dry them briefly, then sow them in the soil. Lemongrass, Ginger, Turmeric, & Galangal: If any remaining rhizomes are starting to sprout, bury them immediately in the soil. They will grow into large clumps. Basil: Can be grown from stem cuttings. Soak the stems in water until roots develop, then transplant them into soil. 2. Leafy Vegetables (Can Be Harvested Repeatedly) These vegetables don't require a large area, and some varieties can be harvested only by the leaves without having to uproot the entire plant: Mustard greens, bok choy, and lettuce: Can be grown from seed or by using the base of the stem (re-cropping). Kangkung and Spinach: Very fast-growing (harvesting in about 3-4 weeks) and relatively hardy. 3. Homegrown Fruit Plants Tomatoes and Cherry Tomatoes: Like chilies, simply sow seeds from ripe tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes are usually early-maturing (fruiting quickly) and are suitable for pots. Lime / Kaffir Lime: The tree can be dwarfed in a large pot (tabulampot), and the leaves and fruit are very useful as a flavoring for cooking. Getting Started Tips for Beginners: Use Used Containers: No need to buy expensive pots. Use used plastic bottles, paint cans, or cooking oil bags that have been cleaned and provided with drainage holes. Fertile Planting Medium: Mix loose soil, compost/manure, and burnt rice husks in a 1:1:1 ratio for optimal plant growth. Sunlight: Make sure your kitchen plants get at least 4–6 hours of sunlight per day (especially chilies and tomatoes).
