Embryo culture begins when the egg and sperm unite (formation of the zygote). In vitro fertilization techniques allow the formed embryo to be "preserved" in the laboratory with specific procedures before being transferred to the mother's uterus. Culture serves to monitor the development of the embryos and identify those with the best developmental potential, i.e., those with the highest probability of generating a pregnancy.
