April 16-19, 2025: My husband and I traveled to Seoul, South Korea. This is the second part of our "Yongin Daejanggeum Park (formerly MBC Dramia) + Suwon Hwaseong Fortress + Hwaseong Temporary Palace Tour" booked through VELTRA. We participated in the "Yi San Tour," a tour that explores the world of the Korean drama "Yi San," and visited the World Heritage sites of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress and Hwaseong Temporary Palace in Suwon, near Seoul. Hwaseong, built by King Jeongjo out of deep filial piety toward his father, Crown Prince Sado, is a historical heritage site representative of the late Joseon Dynasty, a place imbued with love, righteousness, and a passion for reform. Hwaseong, which appears numerous times in the drama "Yi San," is portrayed as the son of the protagonists, Yi San (Jeongjo) and Dong Yi, and his personality and struggles as a king are reflected in the scenery here. On this tour, we first took a thorough look at Hwaseong Temporary Palace. This magnificent villa was built by King Jeongjo to welcome his mother, Lady Hyegyeong. It served as the setting for heartwarming scenes with Seri and the Queen in the drama. The elegant buildings, beautifully painted in dancheong (red brocade), exude the richness of the royal culture of the time. Visitors to Bongsudang, the center of the palace, and Sinpoongru, where banquets were held, conveyed the king's personality and his devotion to his family. Afterward, we walked along the walls of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress and were amazed by the modern defensive city concept that King Jeongjo built. The approximately 5.7-kilometer fortress, with its orderly arrangement of gates, towers, and towers on the north, south, east, and west sides, offers a glimpse into King Jeongjo's aspirations for building this land, as well as the ideal government and love he sought for people, all while enjoying the local scenery. This is a must-see for fans of Korean history and drama, as well as those who want to experience history through travel.
