Introduction to Gas power Cycles Gas Power Cycle Thermodynamics Gas power cycles are thermodynamic cycles during which power is produced and the working fluid remains in the gaseous phase. The devices which work according to these devices are called engines. Heat Engine Thermodynamics The purpose of an engine is to convert chemical energy to thermal energy or work while operating in a cycle. All the engines (Petrol/Gasoline, Diesel, Gas turbines, turbojet, and spacecraft engines) operate according to gas power cycles. The analysis of engines is very difficult due to friction and non-equilibrium expansions/compressions. To perform thermodynamic analysis, we make some simplifications and apply some assumptions on actual cycles. The resulting cycle is called the ideal cycle. Gas Power Cycle Basic Concepts In an ideal cycle, expansion and compression processes are quasi-equilibrium (near-equilibrium) and there is no friction as well. Moreover, all pipes connecting different parts of the engine are well insulated to avoid any loss of heat. Changes in kinetic and potential energies are also neglected as these values are relatively small in comparison with internal energy and enthalpy values.
