It's not clear whether this footage represents an extract from a news cameraman's dailies, or a portion of a documentary film. The 1959 festival was the 12th annual, running from April 30th to May 15th. The Palme d'Or this year went to ‘Orfeu Negro’ (Black Orpheus) by Marcel Camus. The hauntingly beautiful ‘Dairy of Anne Frank’ by George Stevens closed the show. The Cannes Film Festival runs annually in Cannes, France. New films covering every genre from around the globe are put to the test here. Bustling new actresses and directors mingle with veterans as a few are interviewed prior to the showings. The film opens with a soft black and white view of the shoreline of Cannes beaches (:11). Orson Welles (:25) enjoys lunch with guests. A short haired bombshell interviews over her featured work at the festival on a boat with city buildings of Cannes behind. A young Jean-Pierre Leaud is interviewed (5:31). Leaud stared in ‘The 400 Blows’ directed by Francois Truffaut. A press photographer appears at the bottom right screen (8:23) as guests of the festival enjoy refreshments in an open cafe. Guests settle into their seats (9:02). Poet and actress Pascal Petit is (9:14) interviewed in her hotel room with playing cards strewn about the table. A Vespa 400 zips by (10:07). Well-dressed stars move down La Promenade de la Croisette (10:13). A star takes a swing at miniature golf (10:26). The captivating Zsa Zsa Gabor entertains the press in white petals (11:55). The city shoreline runs behind (11:59). The Palais de Festivals appears at night (14:44). The bombshell German French actress Romy Schneider (16:00) interviews in the cafe in the evening. Romy stared in the 1959 ‘Die Halbzarte’. Suited guests enter the building for the show (17:53). Kim Novak swings in close to the camera (18:05). Novak stared in the nominated film, ‘Middle of the Night’. Photographs are snapped as the 0glitz and glamour of film enter front door (18:22). Hitomi Nozoe; the star of "White-Heron" interviews outside on a balcony as harbor boats drift in the background (18:53). The mob of film fans and stars (20:54) readies for the show as the film concludes. Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
