How He Turned a Simple Idea Into $2 Million in Sales
Submit your product to Gateway: https://inventright.com/go/h3c0kwlZUVp5 How did a simple stock tank cover go from zero to more than $2 million in sales in just two years? In this inventRightTV interview, Stephen Key talks with Nick Norman of Polar Protector about what it actually took to turn a simple product idea into a real business. Nick saw a gap on Amazon when he could not find a cover for a stock tank used for cold plunges, designed a solution, patented the design, found overseas manufacturers, and launched with less than $2,500. For anyone building a physical product, this episode is valuable because it is not just about the product — it is about the decisions behind it: choosing a lightweight fabric product, protecting margins, keeping shipping costs low, and building something scalable from the start. Nick also shares what got hard once the product started moving. Copycats flooded Amazon. Inventory became a constant problem. Retail interest came in before the business was fully ready to ship pallets and scale cleanly. One of the biggest turning points came when he stopped assuming who the customer was and started talking to them directly. He thought the main buyer was the cold plunge market. Instead, customer conversations revealed a much bigger opportunity with farmers and ranchers, which changed the company’s marketing, product direction, and growth path. This is the kind of founder story that gives the viewer something useful: what he got right early, where the bottlenecks showed up, what the market told him that he did not know at first, and why customer feedback ended up creating the next opportunity. In this episode: • How did they turn their idea into a product? • What mistakes did they make launching their product? • How do you get a product into the market? • What does it take to succeed as an inventor?
