Tonton, a lost piglet, was brought to the police station in Ebino City, Miyazaki Prefecture. He received devoted care from the officers and was loved as the 43rd member of the group. However, after two weeks of storage passed without an owner appearing, Tonton's fate took a major turn. What kind of life is Tonton living now with his new owner? ■A Piglet Arrives at the Police Station Lost and found items brought to the police in Miyazaki Prefecture have been steadily increasing over the past five years. In 2025, 104 dogs and 13 cats were reported as lost items in the prefecture, and in the past, unusual animals such as turtles, rabbits, iguanas, and chickens have also been reported. Amidst this trend, a piglet was brought to the police station in Ebino City, Miyazaki Prefecture. It was a male piglet, approximately 50cm long and weighing about 8kg. Around 9:00 AM on March 30th, a piglet was found walking on a street in Daimyoji, Ebino City, and rescued by a local resident. It is believed to have escaped from a pig farm or fallen from a transport truck. The police have taken custody of the piglet as "found property" under the Lost Property Act. Ebino Police Station Deputy Chief Hideki Yonezawa: "This is my first experience with a piglet, and I was surprised, but it's very cute. We have 42 officers, but it feels like we have a 43rd officer, and everyone is doting on it. Personally, I call it 'Tonton'." Tonton has been kept in a cage on the police station grounds, and officers have been taking turns feeding it and moving it inside the building on cold days, providing excellent care. When the microphone is pointed at Tonton, it responds with a "boo-boo" (?), showing how much the Ebino police officers love it. ■To a New Family However, even after two weeks had passed since Tonton's rescue, no owner had come forward. Therefore, the police decided to select a new owner for Tonton from the eight offers they had received. The new owner is Kota Kono, who runs a cattle farm in Kushima City. He will be raising Tonton as a pet at his home under the guidance of the Miyazaki Livestock Health and Hygiene Center. Kota Kono: I want to keep the name "Tonton" and raise him that way. Above all, I want to raise him healthily and freely. Unlike commercial animal husbandry, I'm looking forward to raising him as a pet. Ms. Yonezawa, who had been taking care of Tonton, said with a mixture of relief and sadness, "I'm truly relieved that he's been taken in by such a kind person. But I'm still a little lonely. Some officers have said they want to go visit him, so I, along with them, would like to go and check on him." ■Tonton's Aftermath About a week after he was taken in, we asked Ms. Kono about Tonton's condition... Tonton has a hearty appetite, eating 2.5 kg of cow feed a day, and mooes when it's feeding time. Ms. Kono says it's become very lively. His weight has increased to about 10 kg, and he's completely adjusted to his new environment and is doing well. And, Deputy Chief Yonezawa, who had been lonely, immediately went to check on him and left with a relieved expression. When asked if Tonton remembered Ms. Yonezawa, Ms. Kono paused for a moment before saying, "I got the feeling he remembered me." On April 22nd, Tonton underwent a health check and swine fever vaccination by the Miyazaki Livestock Health and Hygiene Center. Tonton was initially surprised by the people in white coats, but accepted them without hesitation once they petted him. Ms. Kono said, "Livestock are normally used for meat, but I think it's good to have pigs like Tonton that bring smiles to people's faces. I'm actually getting energy from him, so I'm really glad I took him in." Receiving Ms. Kono's unconditional love, Tonton is growing up healthy and strong. Both Ms. Kono and Tonton seem to be living happily. While Tonton was fortunate enough to find a new family, many animals are still being turned in as "lost property" throughout the prefecture.
