In Volume 7 of my Koyasan series, I explore Danjo Garan. Chumon is a significant gate built as a symbolic boundary separating the secular world from the sacred world of the Buddha. Stepping through this gate, you enter a realm of prayer and quiet contemplation. The current Chumon gate was rebuilt in 2015, about 170 years after it was destroyed by a fire in 1843. Constructed using traditional Japanese woodworking techniques, its 18 pillars were assembled entirely without nails, reflecting the enduring craftsmanship passed down through generations. In this video, you will also see the stump of a 374-year-old Japanese cypress (Hinoki) that was used in the reconstruction of the gate. Through the history and architectural features of Chumon, I hope you can experience the solemn atmosphere of Danjo Garan, one of the defining sites of the World Heritage Koyasan.
