'90s Shibuya-Kei Pop and Indie Rock【 THE NTS GUIDE TO… 】

Shibuya-kei translates literally as “Shibuya-style”, named after Tokyo's premier shopping district. During the ‘90s Shibuya was the epicentre of Japan's hyper-curated youth movements. Distant from the tribalist musical scenes of the West and with access to a smorgasbord of import CDs, Shibuya kids consumed music with a disregard for era, trend, or genre, enjoying Brazilian bossa nova as equally as a Paul Weller record or a Chicago house track. The fashion they wore, and the music they made, suggested that for a brief time, they were the world's coolest and most discerning consumers – bands like Pizzicato Five, Flipper's Guitar and artists like Kamiri Kahrie and Towa Tei shared an affinity for magpie-esque cherry picking of references, creating collages of pop and rock styles that could have only come from Tokyo.
