Did you know that the village of Joanes was an important point for the Portuguese crown during the colonial period? In this video, I'll tell you all about the history of the village, the Indigenous people who lived there, and why the village of Joanes is so important to our history. For much of the colonial period, Joanes held great economic and geopolitical importance for the Portuguese government. At the time, the island was called "Ilha Grande dos Joanes" (Big Island of Joanes), as Joanes were the name given to members of one of the island's large Indigenous nations. Located on one of the island's highest points, in Marajó Bay, Joanes could control the entry of foreign ships seeking access to Belém and the Tocantins, Xingu, and Amazon rivers. During the 16th century, the Portuguese were more concerned with managing their economic enterprises and exercising their political dominance on the east coast of Brazil, and they had no way to prevent English, Dutch, and French trading companies from trading with Indigenous leaders at the mouth of the Amazon. To conquer the island, the Portuguese had to expel these Europeans and encourage the arrival of missionaries, who used indigenous labor for extractive activities.
