From Kyoto’s factories to nursing homes and construction sites, migrant workers from Vietnam, Thailand, China, India, and Nepal are becoming the backbone of Japan’s struggling industries. We visit factories in Kyoto and Gifu where over half the workforce is foreign, meet Chinese workers under the Specified Skilled Worker visa, and hear from business leaders who believe Japan’s future depends on creating a society where Japanese and foreigners can work together. In Tokyo’s “Little India,” we see how multicultural coexistence is taking shape — even as far-right nationalism grows louder. As Japan’s population continues to shrink and age, industries like nursing care are desperate for help. By 2040, the country will be short by over half a million caregivers, and one in three citizens will be elderly. With domestic workers declining, the government has little choice but to open the doors wider — even as xenophobia spreads through social media and politics.
