PENGLAI GE: The Pavilion Above the Sea | 蓬莱阁
Penglai Pavilion (蓬莱阁) is one of the Four Great Ancient Towers of China. Standing on a cliff above the Yellow Sea in Shandong Province, it was built in 1061 AD during the Song Dynasty by Zhu Chuyue, governor of Dengzhou. This is the birthplace of one of China's most beloved legends: the Eight Immortals crossing the sea — 八仙过海，各显神通. After drinking at the Pavilion, the Eight Immortals each used their own magical power to cross the Yellow Sea. From this legend comes the famous Chinese proverb: each person shows their own special ability. Penglai is also China's finest location to witness the sea mirage (蜃景) — on certain mornings, distant islands appear to float above the horizon.
