If you don't have your prom jewelry picked out yet, don't worry! You're sure to find something you love in this issue full of beautiful bangles, pretty pendants, and charming chokers. This whispered ASMR flip through is the second of three in a series in which we look at 1970s jewelry. In this video, we flip through the April 1974 edition of Seventeen magazine. The lovely Patti Hansen is our cover model. This magazine has everything: long-sleeved floral prom dresses, groovy ‘70s slang, and even problematic ad copy embroidered on jeans. But, more importantly, it has a lot of fun 1970s jewelry. I want a ribbon choker now! ✧ timestamps for points of interest ✧ intro 0:00 opening magazine 2:44 beautiful 1970s Chanel No. 5 ad 5:43 engagement ring ad 18:40 another engagement ring ad 44:04 prom makeup feature 50:59 prom fashion feature 53:47 prom accessory close ups 57:40 “you-do-it jewelry” ideas 1:02:18 various mail-order jewelry 1:03:41 1974 jewelry trend summary 1:12:43 ✧ videos in this series ✧ part 1:    • ASMR 🧡 1970s vintage magazine flip through...   part 2: you are here part 3:    • whisper ASMR 🩷 '70s vintage magazine flip ...   ✧ 1974 jewelry trend notes ✧ This is mostly for my own reference, but here are some notes on the jewelry trends found in this magazine: bangles as the standard bracelet option (usually 1 or 2 worn together, worn with casual and formal attire, clear and colorful and plastic and beaded and wrapped in ribbons or sequins or straw, medium to large in size with a few wide cuffs, notably zero thin bangles), bangles styled over formal gloves (note that this was done in the 1972 magazine as well), short necklaces with large circular beads (some graduated), quite a lot of personalizable jewelry ads in the back, mostly large geometric studs but a few delicate studs as well (notable bc there were no delicate studs in the 1972 magazine), simple hoops (small, medium, and modestly large--no huggies or oversized), turquoise jewelry, corded pendant necklaces (including with formal wear), wide wedding bands (seen on both men and women), round center diamonds on all engagement rings (even trendy ones), a nice variety of unique engagement designs (options are not just basic/classic), several pinky rings (including one on a man), wide ribbon chokers with floral focal points (this was with formal wear), some doubled up beaded necklaces, and I just realized this issue contained literally zero watches (?) so that's a notable absence I also just found myself thinking about the way jewelry is described as "plastic" in this issue. Today, at least as far as I'm aware, people who market jewelry generally avoid calling plastic jewelry "plastic" because consumer sentiment about plastic is very negative. Instead of saying jewelry is "plastic," they might avoid mentioning the jewelry's materials (as much as legally possible) or they would get more specific and say the type of plastic. For example, a bracelet might be called an "acrylic bangle" rather than a "plastic bangle." Calling the bracelet "acrylic" avoids the use of a word that conjures up a bunch of negative emotions.
