Moelfre Coastal Village Walk | Anglesey | Welsh Countryside | 4K

This sunny afternoon walk is around the picturesque former fishing village and coastal area of Moelfre on Anglesey in North Wales. The name 'Moelfre' can be traced back to the Domesday Book of Wales in 1306 and translates to "bald or barren hill" which refers to the land behind the village. In 1157 Moelfre was mentioned as a focal point in a sea battle fought between Anglesey seamen and the English fleet of Henry II. Starting our walk at the top of the hill we follow the fast flowing river which winds through the beautiful homes and cafes, cascading down as a lovely waterfall before heading out to the sea below. The small cove of Moelfre has a pebble beach that is lined by cafes, shops, a pub and beautiful cottages. There has been an RNLI lifeboat station here since the 1830's. The new station was built in 2015 and the lifeboats are often seen out in the bay on training exercises or shouts. The statue outside the station is of Richard Evans, a lifeboat crew member who's bravery earned him the RNLI gold medal twice, and was unveiled on 24th November 2004 by HRH Prince Charles now King Charles III. Past the lifeboat station we walk along the coastal path with its beautiful views out to sea and many different species of wildlife including Gulls, Cormorants, Oystercatchers and Curlew. There have also been sightings of Dolphins, Porpoises and Seals. This area has a world famous and tragic maritime history. On 25th October 1859 the steam clipper Royal Charter, returning from Melbourne, Australia to Liverpool, England was wrecked just off the coast here in hurricane force winds with the loss of over 450 lives, the highest death toll of any shipwreck on the Welsh coast. The disaster had an effect on the Meteorological Office with the first gale warning service being brought in. Known as the Royal Charter Storm it was frequently used as a yardstick in other national disasters. Exactly a century to the day in October 1959 another ship, the Hindlea, hit the rocks in almost the same spot.
