Located about 100 kilometers southwest of Lhasa, the lake sits at an altitude of 4,441 meters. It is renowned worldwide for its surreal turquoise-jade waters, winding shoreline, and dramatic, snow-capped mountain backdrop. Altitude & Size: Perched at 4,441 meters (14,570 feet), this massive freshwater lake is over 72 km long. Sacred Status: It is considered a holy guardian of Tibetan Buddhism, famously used by holy men in the search to locate reincarnated souls of the Dalai Lama. Scenic Views: The best panoramic view is from Kambala Pass at 4,990 meters. From this vantage, the lake resembles a sprawling jade jewel set against the Nyainqêntanglha mountains. Wildlife: The surrounding shores and islets are a haven for migratory birds (swans, egrets) and are often dotted with grazing yaks and sheep.
