An acting class, a hidden identity, and a moment I still regret.

In 1970, while studying theatre at the University of South Carolina, I was paired with a quiet acting student named Fred for a scene from Teach Me How To Cry. He confided something to me that, at the time, was almost unheard of. Two years later I saw Fred again while eating at the International House of Pancakes. I froze. I didn’t say hello. I didn’t acknowledge her. I didn’t know what to say — and I’ve thought about that moment ever since. This story is about acting, grief, identity, the early days of gender transition in America, and the lesson I learned about empathy and courage.
