Some amazing events and individuals emerge, people who were pioneers and struggled against the odds to accomplish the extraordinary. We find people like Frederick Douglas Patterson of Greenfield-Patterson automobiles; the first black car designer at a major company, McKinley Thompson Jr at Ford thanks to Motor Trend magazine; the first supercar designed by a black inventor, David Gittens, the Ikenga GT (incidentally he was also a staff photographer at Car & Driver magazine); the most successful black automotive industry executive, Edward Welburn of General Motors; Victor Hugo Green who created the Green Book black travel guide in the Jim Crow era; World War I veteran Charlie Wiggins and the Gold and Glory Sweepstakes races; moonshine runner and the first licenced black NASCAR racer, Wendell Scott; Willy T Ribbs the first black driver to qualify for the Indy 500 and drive a Formula 1 car; and of course current F1 champion and history-maker Lewis Hamilton.
