We build the explanation step by step using tree diagrams, starting from simple VP structure, then moving through NegP, TP, CP, tense features, affix hopping, and the role of the PF component. The main question is simple: when tense has nowhere to attach, why does English insert do? We also look at special cases, including ellipsis, yes/no questions, negative questions, the unusual case of “Aren’t I…?”, and emphatic do in sentences like “He DID win it.” This video is part of my syntax series, where I explain theoretical linguistics in a clear and visual way, while still keeping the technical details for students of grammar, syntax, and linguistics. If you enjoy syntax, minimalist grammar, or just want to understand why English sometimes behaves in strange ways, this one is for you.
