About one hour from Nagoya, I head to Hamanako-Sakume Station aboard the Tenryu Hamanako Railroad (Tenhama Line) in search of a special winter-only sight. This station is famous for the black-headed gulls that gather on the platform every winter after migrating from Siberia. Here, you can witness a rare scene where trains and gulls come together in a unique railway landscape. When I arrived, I found far more gulls than I expected flying around the station. As the train arrived, the platform suddenly became full of excitement. I experienced up close the fascinating and fun scene created by the gulls, people, and trains. The station building also has plenty of unique attractions, including posters of Yuru Camp△ and Neon Genesis Evangelion, as well as distinctive facilities that make Hamanako-Sakume Station truly special. During the journey, I also enjoyed a meal at “Cafe & Restaurant Cattleya,” located next to the station, while taking in the beautiful view of Lake Hamana. Will the gulls really land on my head?
