This week on our off grid homestead in rural Italy, we start repairing a century-old dry stone wall on our abandoned land — but once we look closer, we realise this old stone wall has a hidden problem. What first looked like a simple stone wall restoration job quickly turns into a much bigger homestead construction project. The wall is not built the way we expected, with old stones, soil, roots, loose sections and a structure that needs careful repair before we can move forward. We are learning as we go, using traditional materials like hydraulic lime and lime mortar, trying to respect the original dry stone wall while making it stable enough for the future. This episode is a real look at DIY homestead work, stone masonry, old stone house renovation, land restoration and the reality of building an off grid homestead from scratch. We’re Emily & Robi — turning 5 acres of abandoned land in rural Italy into a self sufficient off grid homestead.
