William Kentridge on City Deep
“City Deep happens both in the landscape outside Johannesburg and in the centre of the city in a beautiful old art museum[..] there’s a kind of echo between the galleries in the Royal Academy and those in the Johannesburg Art Museum” City Deep is the eleventh in the series of Soho Eckstein films, started in 1989. In 1990 there was the film Mine, which had images of deep level industrial mining. 19 years later deep level mining has moved to the surface mining of the “zama zama” miners - the informal mine work taking place in abandoned mines - manual labour replacing large machines. This activity is set against images of the Johannesburg Art Gallery, itself built on the basis of the heyday of gold mining in Johannesburg. Visit William Kentridge at @royalacademyarts to view ‘City Deep (2020)’ and Drawings for Projection among other films in his major retrospective. The 5 star exhibition spans his multidisciplinary practice of three decades. 🎥: @al_kitchen_film #WilliamKentridge #RoyalAcademyofArts #GoodmanGallery #London
