A family dispute over the ownership of a 13,000 square meter plot of land resulted in the death of businessman José Augusto in Águas de Lindóia, in the interior of São Paulo state. The case dates back 20 years, when Cláudio, José's brother-in-law, tried to buy part of the property. Despite an initial agreement for payment in installments, Cláudio failed to make the payments and lost a lawsuit to José Augusto, who regained full possession of the land. On the day of the crime, while cutting bamboo on the property, José Augusto was fatally surprised by Cláudio, who fired twice with a 12-gauge shotgun.
