Ruffian’s Final Race / Ruffian vs. Foolish Pleasure The Great Match and One of Racing’s Saddest Days

On July 6, 1975, undefeated champion Ruffian faced Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure at Belmont Park in the nationally televised race known as “The Great Match.” The highly anticipated showdown became one of the saddest moments in horse racing history when Ruffian suffered a catastrophic injury to her right front ankle. Despite emergency surgery, she was euthanized early the following morning. Ruffian entered the race undefeated through 10 starts and remains one of the most brilliant and beloved fillies the sport has ever known.
