The A-7 Corsair II: The Digital Bomber That Changed Aerial Warfare.

The documentary begins with the Vought A-7 Corsair II, a subsonic light bomber designed to replace the aging Douglas A-4 Skyhawk. Based on the legendary F-8 Crusader but shortened and fitted with a turbofan engine, the A-7 brought unprecedented precision to the battlefield. It featured the first functional heads-up display (HUD) and an all-digital navigation and weapons delivery system. We detail how the Air Force, initially reluctant to adopt a Navy airframe, was forced to purchase the A-7D, which quickly became a pilot favorite due to its staggering bombing accuracy and long loiter times. Vought's design was so successful that it served well into the 1990s, with a heavily modified YA-7F strike fighter variant briefly considered as an A-10 replacement. The narrative shifts to the controversial birth of the A-10 Thunderbolt II. Following the failures of fast supersonic jets in the close air support role during Vietnam, defense analysts like Pierre Sprey and Colonel Avery Kay pushed for a dedicated ground-attack aircraft. Leveraging the Air Force's fear of losing their budget to the Army's Cheyenne helicopter, the AX program was initiated. We examine the A-10's brutalist design, including the 1,200-pound titanium bathtub protecting the pilot and the massive 30-millimeter GAU-8 Avenger rotary cannon.
