On ilSussidiario.tv, Alberto Bradanini, former Italian ambassador to Iran and China, analyzes NATO, the defense and security spending target, Article 5, Italian sovereignty, and the war in Ukraine. In an interview with ilSussidiario.tv, Bradanini criticizes the Allies' commitment to allocate 5% of GDP to defense and security by 2035: at least 3.5% to defense in the strict sense and up to 1.5% to broader security-related investments. He also disputes the prospect of a future Russian invasion of the rest of Europe, calling it a "fairytale." According to Bradanini, there is no evidence that Moscow has the "intention, interest, or capacity" to attack the entire continent, while the Russian-Ukrainian war could only be concluded through political negotiations. The most serious risk, in his view, is nuclear: if Russia sees its defeat approaching, it could resort to nuclear weapons, with devastating consequences especially for the Baltic states, Poland, the Scandinavian countries, and perhaps even Germany. On the Italian level, Bradanini links the issue of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty to national sovereignty and defines Italy as a "vassal state." To support his argument, he cites the US military presence and the American flights that, according to him, departed from the peninsula during the conflict with Iran. Finally, he considers Italy's refusal to join the PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) mechanism, through which Allies and partners finance the purchase of US military equipment for Ukraine, to be defensible. Bradanini interprets Italy's decision as a sign of political prudence, budgetary constraints, and perhaps a "minimal sensitivity" toward public opinion, without, however, considering it a manifestation of true strategic autonomy. The key issue, he concludes, remains the "political trap," whereby demanding a realistic and immediate end to the war would risk being labeled pro-Russian.
