What It Really Takes to Groom for a Million Dollar Reining Trainer (4:30 am Day in the Life)
Ever wonder what it actually takes to keep a barn full of reining horses show-ready? This week I handed the GoPro to Jesus, my groom, for a true, unfiltered day behind the scenes of my program in Arizona β from a 4:30 AM start to the last stall swept. We start early and finish early in the summer to beat the desert heat, and this is every part of the daily routine that happens before and after I ever throw a leg over β the horsemanship most people never see. You'll follow the full grooming process for each horse I ride, plus the summer details that make all the difference in Arizona: scrubbing faces and legs to keep sweat-and-dust fungus away, taping front feet so a horse doesn't pull a shoe when he stops, and exactly how we wrap hind legs for support in the stop. From there it's morning turnout (and how we keep studs, colts, and mares separated in the mare motel), fly control, barn fans, mane braiding, and saddling. Once the horses are ridden, the day is only half done. You'll see our full summer bathing and cooling routine, how we treat scratches and skin fungus on the young horses, hand-walking the ones resting after injections, and the end-of-day cleanup and tack care that gets everything ready to do it all again tomorrow β including the first steps of prepping to haul to a show in Colorado. Honest work, start to finish. This is what really goes into a professional reining program. π Want to learn more about my training program?
