"Mayim Mayim" is the latest musical meme to hit Japanese video sharing site Nico Nico Douga. While the song's real life application originated from the Israel folk song/dance of the same name, it's transition to Japanese meme status revolved around the catchy chorus. Unlike the Japanese meme "Soran Soran," Mayim's dance was lost in translation. While Mayim has been on Nico Douga before paired with popular Japanese memes like Battle Dome and Shuzu Matsuoka, interest never really peaked until this past September. Popular mahjong anime Saki became the first combination to take Mayim over 1,000 favorites (or My Lists as it's known on Nico). Days later, Mayim was paired with the two most popular anime shows of the year Bakemonogatari and K-ON combining catchy music with the animes' signature moe, or super cute, appeal. Since then, the method of presentation has shifted in post production where anime clips used to go over a stationary background of an anime character's head. Whether the dance will eventually make it to the Japanese audience is still up to time to tell but until then, many successful remixes have stemmed from "Mayim Mayim" as the video indicates.
