The Lusitano horse is a horse breed of Portuguese origin whose name derives from Lusitania. Their fame dates back to Roman times, when their speed was attributed to the influence of the west wind, which was believed to be capable of inseminating mares. 1 This is a Baroque-type Iberian horse that is considered the oldest riding horse in the world. 2 Until the 1960s, it shared the same horse registry as the Andalusian horse. 3 They range in height at the withers from 150 to 160 cm. They are compact, with muscular hindquarters, strong and long legs, and a wide stride, a sloping croup, a low-set tail, a broad chest, rounded ribs, a broad forehead, a Roman nose, and abundant mane and tail. Lusitano horses come in a wide variety of solid colors, the least common and sought-after being palomino and cremello. As with the Andalusian horse, their bravery, flexibility, and nobility have traditionally been highlighted, making them suitable for riding, bullfighting, and dressage.
