The Genius Strategy That Saved Zippo From Extinction
A one-product company whose entire market was disappearing. Smoking rates were cut in half, Bic made flame disposable, and Zippo — built around the same brass windproof lighter since 1932 — should have been finished. Yet from the same small factory in Bradford, Pennsylvania, Zippo still repairs over a million lighters a year, for free. This is the story of how a product outlived the habit it was built to serve. It begins in the Great Depression, when George G. Blaisdell watched a friend fight with a clumsy imported windproof lighter and saw a problem worth solving. He founded Zippo in 1932 with one mission: a flame that works every time, in any weather. His 1933 design — the windproof chimney, the flint-wheel ignition, one-handed operation, a brass-and-steel case with that unmistakable click — earned a U.S. patent in 1936. But the real moat came after the patent expired: proprietary tooling, a specific brass alloy, hand-fitted lids, and decades of tacit know-how on the Bradford floor that rivals could see but never reproduce. Then the world changed. The 1964 Surgeon General's report began the long decline of smoking, and 1970s disposable lighters rewrote the economics of flame. Zippo's answer was a promise stamped into every case — "It works or we fix it free" — turning a repair bench into the business model itself. Today the brand survives on collectors, engraved gifts (nearly a third of revenue by the 2000s), and a hand-warmer line, proving that durability isn't a feature — it's the product. ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 The product that should have died 00:38 1932: Blaisdell's better windproof flame 02:54 The 1933 design — the chimney that beats the wind 05:15 The hidden moat: tooling, brass & tacit skill 07:59 WWII — how a tool became a keepsake 09:25 1964: the Surgeon General and the decline of smoking 11:30 Bic and the disposable-lighter threat 13:13 "It works or we fix it free" 16:10 Reinvention: collectors, gifts & hand warmers 18:45 Bradford: the factory as identity 🔔 Subscribe to Made to Last for the hidden business stories behind the everyday objects you own. 📌 Historical details and figures are researched from public sources and presented for educational purposes. #MadeToLast #Zippo #MadeInUSA
