Hayri Pilav, one of the witnesses to the Dersim Massacre, described as the "Black Day," stated that only he and his mother were able to return to their village after their exile, adding that similar practices have continued for 84 years. It has been 84 years since the massacre in Dersim, which took place between 1937 and 1938 and has become a dark stain on history. The massacre was initiated by a special decree issued by the Council of Ministers on May 4, 1937, under the title "Dersim Expulsion Decisions." Many prominent figures in the city were executed during the massacre. Thousands of people were either burned or shot en masse in houses and caves. According to official figures, 1,737 people were massacred in 1937 and 6,868 in 1938. However, according to unofficial figures, at least 70,000 people were killed during the two years of the massacre. Tens of thousands of survivors were deported to Central Anatolia in black wagons. Girls taken from their families were also given to soldiers as "booty." BLACK DAY Since the massacre, Kurds have celebrated May 4th as "Roza Şiyaye (Black Day). Every year on this date, red carnations are placed in the Munzur River and lokma is distributed in memory of those killed. Hayri Pilav (86), who was only two years old at the time of the massacre, told our agency what he heard from his mother at the time and what he experienced after the massacre.
