Slab City, California: A Desert Apocalypse?

In the dry desert landscape of Southern California exists a unique community that rejects conventional norms. Slab City, sometimes referred to as "The Last Free Place in America", stands as a testament to the human spirit’s ability to carve out a niche in the harshest of conditions. This remote squatter’s paradise, built on the remains of the Second World War military base, is a melting pot of drifters, artists, retirees, and individuals seeking an alternative way of life. Slab City’s roots trace back to the nineteen forties. Originally, it was Camp Dunlap, a training facility for the United States Marine Corps during the War. When the military decommissioned the base in the 1950s, they removed the buildings but left behind the concrete slabs which once formed their foundations. It didn't take long for enterprising individuals to see potential in this abandoned land. By the 1960s, RV owners started to take advantage of the free camping spaces. Over the decades, the number of seasonal visitors grew, and with them, an intricate, self-governing community took shape. Residents of Slab City, or Slabbers, come from a myriad of backgrounds.
