The Shahadat (martyrdom) of Bibi Sakina (s.a.)—also known as Sayyida Ruqayyah bint al-Husayn—is one of the most tragic and heart-wrenching chapters in the aftermath of the Battle of Karbala (61 AH / 680 CE). She was the youngest daughter of Imam Hussain (a.s.) and Bibi Umme Rubab (s.a.), revered as an enduring symbol of innocence, patience (sabr), and devotion. The Journey and Captivity Thirst in Karbala: During the three days of intense blockade in Karbala, 4-year-old Bibi Sakina (s.a.) endured extreme thirst alongside the young children of the Ahl al-Bayt. She held a special bond of love with her uncle, Hazrat Abbas ibn Ali (a.s.), who gave his life attempting to fetch water for her and the children from the River Euphrates. The Forced March: Following the massacre on the Day of Ashura, Bibi Sakina (s.a.) and the surviving women and children were taken as captives. They were marched in harsh desert conditions from Karbala to Kufa, and ultimately to Damascus (Sham), tied in heavy chains without basic shelter or water. The Dungeon of Sham (Zindan-e-Sham) Upon reaching Damascus, the captives were held in a dark, dilapidated dungeon beneath the palace of Yazid. The Conditions: The dungeon lacked protection from the elements, leaving the grieving family exposed to scorching heat by day and freezing cold by night. Throughout her captivity, Bibi Sakina (s.a.) constantly remembered her father, Imam Hussain (a.s.), often waking up crying in the night calling out for him.
