ROOT CANAL TREATMENT? AFTER ALL, WHAT IS ROOT CANAL TREATMENT? Isn't it better to take antibiotics before treatment? Will the anesthesia work? It's very inflamed, Doctor. Won't this tooth turn dark? Wouldn't it be better to pull it out and get an implant? Then we can nip it in the bud. Root canal treatment isn't meant to cause harm to the patient, but rather to restore the health of the tooth. What is root canal treatment? It's the treatment of the inside of the tooth. When an injury reaches the pulp, pulpitis occurs. This can be very severe, a pulsating inflammation inside the tooth that seems to resolve itself. It's worsened by heat, cold, and biting. There's also mild pulpitis, inflammation caused by a filling or very deep cavity. The patient barely feels anything, saying, "Oh, I felt that little discomfort... I felt a little burning." Anyway, it doesn't cause severe pain; it's a slow, long-lasting pain. If this persists, the death of these tissues, blood vessels, and nerves occurs, leading to pulp necrosis, gangrene, and decay. This would be a third condition, an infection. It changes the focus of treatment a bit, but it also needs to be treated. Do I really need to treat this root canal? If left untreated, this infection could spread to other parts of our body. The infection spread to the sinuses and brain. She had facial paralysis, and her condition worsened significantly. Or this infection could even reach the heart, or this region of the heart, or any other part of the body; this can be very dangerous. It's a minority of cases, but it does exist. So, for us in the healthcare field, infection must be treated at all times. So let's answer the questions: Does the tooth darken? Front teeth can darken. Removing the nerve, that region of the nerve, the pulp, which is a reddish blood tissue, changes the color it reflects to us, and the tooth color changes. It "can change" over time. So, with front teeth, we need to be careful. Does the tooth weaken? It can. Depending on the damage we've already done to the tooth, or the access we've made to the root canals, we can lose up to 50% of its strength. After treatment, we'll need to reinforce the tooth with a crown or a post to strengthen and restore it. My tooth is very swollen, will it heal? My tooth is very swollen, will anesthesia work? Very large swellings are more difficult to anesthetize, today with anesthetics and combination techniques. That's not the big problem anymore. The tooth is infected, do I need to take antibiotics? No, the antibiotic is carried by the blood. In the root canal, when the blood vessels rot, the antibiotic can no longer reach it. Unless the patient has a fever or a lot of pus. Then, in some cases, we start antibiotics. Isn't it better to extract the tooth, remove it, and place an implant? The tooth has ligaments, is sensitive when biting, chewing, and has a certain amount of mobility. So a good root is always better than any implant. If the root is bad, the cavity has arrived and "eaten everything," then it's okay, the dentist will say: it's better to do the implant. In short: Does root canal treatment hurt? As I said, today we have very modern anesthetics, studies on anesthetic techniques, combinations of techniques, more modern materials. It's rare for a patient to feel anything, really rare. Out of every 9 patients, one feels something, some discomfort, we manage it, and it's not that excruciating pain. Oh, why do people say it hurts? Because when something hurts, you tell 20 people, and if it works, you don't tell anyone. So, in short: It doesn't hurt like people say it does; it might hurt later. When we remove a cuticle, it hurts, so when we touch the inside, it can cause inflammation. For this, we prescribe anti-inflammatory and painkiller, okay?! Don't be afraid.
