LIVE COURT: FL v Demorris Hunter: The Ghost of College Park - Day 1

A man already convicted of murder in California could face the death penalty if he’s found guilty in a separate killing in Florida. Demorris Hunter, 59, is charged with first-degree murder and theft in the death of Theresa Ann Green, 38, who was found strangled and left in the trunk of her own car. On May 26, 2002, Hunter and Green were living in the same apartment complex and both attended a party hosted by neighbors. Witnesses told police the two left at the same time, fell on the stairs, then got up and entered Green’s apartment together. Hours later, Hunter allegedly returned to the neighbors’ apartment and asked for help. According to investigators, he handed over keys to a white van and asked one of the neighbors to follow him as he drove Green’s car. The neighbor told police he never saw Green. Hunter parked her Oldsmobile at a Walgreens, then got into the van. When questioned about leaving the car behind, Hunter reportedly said, “I did something really bad.” The neighbor said he didn’t want to hear more, and the conversation ended. Police later located the vehicle at the Walgreens. Inside the trunk, they found Green’s body wrapped in material. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide caused by manual strangulation. Investigators also spoke with the owner of the van, who said Hunter had recently arrived from Oakland, California. He told police Hunter admitted to committing a murder there before traveling to Florida. Hunter was later convicted in the Oakland case and sentenced to 110 years in prison before being extradited to Florida to face charges in Green’s death. Prosecutors have filed notice that they intend to seek the death penalty if he is convicted.
