Peer Gynt - 1977 Open University Productions - produced and directed by John Selwyn Gilbert
Peer Gynt is a five-act play in verse written in 1867 by the Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen. It is one of Ibsen's best known and most widely performed plays. Peer Gynt chronicles the journey of its title character from the Norwegian mountains to the North African desert and back. According to Klaus Van Den Berg, "its origins are Romantic, but the play also anticipates the fragmentations of emerging modernism" and the "cinematic script blends poetry with social satire and realistic scenes with surreal ones." Peer Gynt has also been described as the story of a life based on procrastination and avoidance. Cast: Gillian Bailey; Basil Clarke; Peter Copley; Kenneth Cranham; Billy Hamon; Betty Hardy; Lorna Heilborn; Esmond Knight; Michael Meyer; Patrick Mower; Patrick Mower; Eric Nason; David Neilson; Roy Spencer; Brian Stone; John Wentworth This play is also included in productions for the A307 Open University/BBC course according to research by Amanda Wrigley (2012). The upload was dated 1975, which may indicate the production preceded the course but was included as relevant material.
