Sheila E. - The Belle Of St. Mark (Live) • Toppop
Sheila Escovedo, better known as Sheila E., was immersed in music from an early age. Born into a musical family, her father, the legendary percussionist Pete Escovedo, introduced her to the stage. At just 15 years old, she was called to fill in for her father during a Santana performance. Before achieving solo fame, Sheila E. toured as a percussionist alongside Lionel Richie, Diana Ross, and Marvin Gaye. It was Prince, however, who recognized her potential as a vocalist and solo artist. After meeting her in 1978, he helped her produce and wrote most of the material for her debut album “The Glamorous Life”. The lead single “The Glamorous Life”, from her debut album of the same name, marked her breakthrough moment in 1984. Prince also contributed as a background vocalist on the track. While the song reflects a cynical perspective on the decadence and materialism of a glamorous lifestyle, its core message remains clear: “Without love, it ain’t much.” The single became a massive hit, reaching No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, No. 2 in the Dutch Top 40, and No. 5 on the Flemish Radio 2 Top 30. However, outside the Netherlands and Flanders, the track didn’t achieve similar success across Europe. Interestingly, the song was originally intended for Apollonia 6, Prince’s project at the time, but he reallocated it to Sheila E., giving her career an extraordinary start. Her career includes collaborations with Prince, Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Whitney Houston and Kanye West.
