Die Geschichte des Moutainbikings: Top-Ausstellung im Deutschen Museum Verkehrszentrum München
A new exhibition area has been dedicated to the cultural and technological history of mountain biking since February 27, 2026. Dr. Lukas Breitwieser from the Deutsches Museum gave me a fascinating interview on the topic from a scientific perspective. It's well worth taking a look, and of course, visiting the museum itself at Bavariapark in Munich, which is practically right next to the Theresienwiese. Among the exhibits are one of the first mountain bikes from the 1970s by Joe Breeze ('Breezer'), as well as the Specialized Jumpjumper and the Pro Cruiser. The Deutsches Museum writes on its homepage (source: Deutsches Museum Verkehrszentrum, https://www.deutsches-museum.de/verke... "Today, more than a quarter of all Germans ride mountain bikes. This means that mountain biking has even surpassed soccer in the ranking of actively practiced sports. In a soccer-mad country like Germany, that's a remarkable figure. We encounter these robust off-road bikes in the mountains and forests, but also in the city or at train stations. Whether as sports equipment or as a means of transportation – mountain bikes are versatile and ubiquitous in our everyday lives. The mountain bike originated in the USA in the 1970s and quickly spread worldwide. Against the historical backdrop of the environmental and fitness movements, a veritable cycling boom erupted on the West Coast of the USA. Off-road riding, which promised freedom and adventure, as well as fast-paced downhill races, was popular. ... From small, hobbyist manufacturers..." Soon, globally operating bicycle companies like Breezer, Gary Fisher, Ritchey Design, and Specialized emerged. The mountain bike quickly gained popularity and significantly contributed to the shift in the bicycle's significance from a utilitarian object to a recreational device. The bicycle became a sports and lifestyle product, and the mountain bike a cult object. Evidence of this can be found in fanzines and specialist magazines, films and video games, and children's toys. The mountain bike can also be seen as a driving force in the development of bicycle technology. Technical developments that initially established themselves on the mountain bike soon proved to be trendsetting for general bicycle technology: elements that seem commonplace to us today and that we might not even consider typical of mountain bikes, such as handlebar-mounted shifters, powerful brakes, suspension, etc., can also be found on trekking bikes, gravel bikes, city bikes, cargo bikes, or even folding bikes. In the recent past, the mountain bike also played a significant role in the spread of e-bikes (almost every second pedelec sold is a mountain bike). ... The new mountain biking exhibition area in Hall 3 The German Transport Centre delves deeper into all these topics. ... The highlight here is undoubtedly the first mountain bike in history, Joe Breeze's "Breezer." The second section is dedicated to the successful global spread of the mountain bike. Using iconic objects such as the "Yeti F.R.O." and the "San Andreas Mountain Cycle," the rapid technological development of the two-wheeler is also traced. The third section focuses on the sporting dimension of mountain biking and showcases the bike on which Sabine Spitz became Olympic champion in 2008. Also on display is the downhill bike with which Nina Hoffmann won the World Cup in 2023.
