In the historic and beautiful town of Torre del Greco, not far from Naples, we can admire the Basilica of Santa Croce, built in several stages between the 16th and 19th centuries. Among the paintings, noteworthy are the Madonna della Purità, signed by Paolo De Majo and dated 1763; a Holy Family, attributed to Andrea Vaccaro; and a beautiful Saint Matthew, from the Demurian school, dating to the first half of the 18th century. A visit to the Villa delle Ginestre is a must, famous for being the residence of Giacomo Leopardi. Finally, the Monastero degli Zoccolanti, built in the 16th century. Of particular note is the ground floor, where the entire cycle of paintings dedicated to the life of Saint Francis, attributed to the painter Angelo Mozzillo, was painted along the porticoes. Twenty-seven large panels in which polychrome frescoes tell the story of the Saint, from his early vocation, through the episode of the Crucifix of San Damiano, to the episode of the Wolf of Gubbio. One panel depicts the Poor Clares, and another, opposite the large entrance door, features the image of the Madonna triumphant among clouds, cherubs, and a particularly evocative chromatic atmosphere.
