Walking in Dresden on the Prager Straße. Dresden's richest street, Prager Straße, stretches from Dresden Central Station to the historic center of Dresden. In the course of industrialization, new housing and roads were needed, which also relieved the narrow streets of the old town. Residents complained as early as around 1840, and when the Bohemian Railway Station was finally to be built south of the old town core, a connection between the town center and the station became necessary. As Prager Straße, this connection was created between 1851 and 1853. The demolition of the Höferchen Wollboden on Waisenhausstraße created a new breach, and from this inner-city starting point the new street was led in extension of Seestraße to Wiener Platz in front of the Bohemian Railway Station. Within a very short time, first rich citizens, later bankers, lawyers, but also bakers, etc. settled. Due to the shortage of building land, it was decided to build on Prager Strasse in a closed construction. It developed into one of the most splendid streets in Dresden with numerous shopping and entertainment facilities. Some buildings of particular architectural interest were the Viktoriahaus, the Residenzkaufhaus and the building of the Fire Insurance Company. Its location on Prager Strasse, as Dresden's most important shopping street, was an important motivation for the Bohemian Station to be expanded and rebuilt as the new main train station, which took place in the 1890s, while other proposals were discarded.
