Fast Kubernetes Autoscaling with Knative

Effective auto-scaling ensures that applications can handle increased loads efficiently, improving user experience while optimizing costs and energy consumption. This is beneficial for a wide range of applications, but especially for use-cases with sudden traffic spikes such as e-commerce platforms during flash sales, streaming services broadcasting live events with fluctuating viewer numbers, and financial services handling transactions during volatile market conditions. For Kubernetes, there are various approaches. One of them is the CNCF project Knative, which enables auto-scaling based on incoming HTTP requests. Advantages over Kubernetes default auto-scaling capabilities (HPA, VPA) include faster response to load and support for scale-to-zero. I will show you how much you can reduce cold start times (the delay in serving requests when scaling from zero) and discuss advantages and disadvantages as well as possible use cases. Kubernetes Community Days (KCDs) are global, community-organized events that gather adopters and technologists from open source and cloud native communities. This is our third edition in Munich, and we’re excited to bring the community together. We want to provide a platform for professionals and experts from all levels and backgrounds to learn, network, and share their knowledge on all things cloud native.
