Stefan and Urs Riebel live on Reichenau Island on Lake Constance. The Riebel family has lived on Reichenau Island on Lake Constance for generations. But fishing has changed: catches are declining, many professional fishermen have given up, and there are hardly any young people entering the trade. Nevertheless, father and son head out onto the lake every day, set their nets and traps, and hope for a good catch. The documentary follows the fishermen through their entire workday: from hauling in the nets to gutting, filleting, and smoking the fish, all the way to the fish hatchery, where young fish are raised for release back into the lake. In the process, the film shows just how much manual labor, experience, and patience go into a food product that many people only see as a finished dish on their plate. Amid reed beds, fishing huts, and smokehouses, a portrait emerges of a craft that has been part of Lake Constance for centuries and continues to thrive today on the balance between people and nature.
