Extreme poverty in China: poorest village hopes for change

The yearly per capita income of its residents is below 3,000 yuan (US$475). The village has been targeted as part of President Xi Jinping’s campaign to wipe out poverty across China by 2020. SCMP visits the village to assess its current condition and will return in subsequent years to see if and how the government’s poverty alleviation scheme is working.
