Koh Mak Subdistrict, an island located in the middle of Songkhla Lake, is located in Pak Phayun District, Phatthalung Province. It boasts abundant natural resources and a rich biodiversity. The locals' livelihoods are closely tied to the Songkhla Lake basin, providing a year-round source of livelihood. They catch a variety of fish, crabs, and shrimp for both consumption and sale, generating income. The wetlands here are a key source of income for the locals, including nipa palms and mangrove forests. Another unique way of life for Koh Mak residents who fish in Songkhla Lake is "non-lay," meaning sleeping overnight on a boat to guard fishing equipment that has been placed at sea. Every time they go out, they must bring both sleeping and eating equipment, and some even carry medication in case of illness. Children on Koh Mak have long been trained to live out the night, and children, especially the boys, can do so without any problems. Chan Songsaeng, or Muk, a local fisherman, said that most Koh Mak fishers are familiar with sleeping on the lake, and they do so regularly because it saves time and money. When there's no rain or strong winds, they must take shelter on the islands. Sleeping on the beach is comfortable and safe. Koh Mak people are considered to be natives of the Songkhla Lake basin, and therefore have ties to the lowland people in some districts of Songkhla Province. Furthermore, some of the people here migrated from Songkhla Province, thus maintaining kinship. Traveling by boat and road continues. Mr. Somporn Suwanruangsri and Mr. Somnuk Yodmanee, residents of Koh Mak Subdistrict, Phatthalung Province, said that despite convenient roads, they still use boats to visit relatives in Sathing Phra District, Songkhla Province, as the boat route is more familiar to them and takes less time. Furthermore, the people of Koh Mak have a distinctive spoken language. Women use the pronoun "pom" (sounding "pom") and the ending "krub." They say that while outsiders may find this strange, locals use the "pom" (sounding "krub") to identify themselves as people from Ban Laem Kruat, Koh Mak Subdistrict.
