However, when you actually try to follow along, some of you may find it difficult to even hold the straw in place with your tongue, or feel a stiff, pulling sensation under your chin when you stick your tongue out. “Why can’t I do this?” “Why does my jaw hurt when I stick my tongue out?” If you have felt this way, it may not be due to a lack of willpower. The tongue does not move independently inside the mouth; it is connected to the structure of the hyoid bone, the muscles under the chin, and the area beneath the tongue. Therefore, when you stick your tongue out, the muscles inside your jaw may become tense, or you may feel like your tongue is not coming out easily. On the surface, it may look like just practicing biting a straw, but in reality, it can be linked to tension under the tongue and chin, as well as the patterns that cause the throat to constrict when singing high notes.
