"I Chased Him With Bullets" - Matlala Trial Witness on Fierce AK47 Battle in Joe Ferrari Hit

CAT MATLALA TRIAL | The first state witness in the trial of Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala and his four co-accused has delivered dramatic testimony about an alleged AK-47 ambush at a Centurion golf estate. Security guard Bethuel Mzamo Cele became emotional while recalling the events of August 10, 2022, when a white BMW allegedly arrived at the estate before armed men reportedly opened fire. Cele told the Johannesburg High Court that he was nearly hit by the first bullet before taking cover and returning fire with his 9mm pistol. He testified that he fired 15 rounds during what he described as a situation resembling the "Wild West." The witness also described seeing one alleged attacker being wounded and scrambling back into the BMW. He told the court that another gunman allegedly shouted, "Die, you dog," while firing at the occupants of the targeted vehicle. The shooting is alleged by the state to have been an attempted hit on businessman and taxi boss Joe "Ferrari" Sibanyoni. Prosecutors allege that Matlala masterminded the attack. But the defence has already begun challenging crucial aspects of the state's evidence. During cross-examination, Advocate Riaan Gissing questioned Cele about whether the crime scene was properly secured after the shooting, the collection of spent cartridges, the timing of the police response and the conditions at the scene. The defence also challenged the admissibility and authenticity of CCTV footage that the state wants to introduce as evidence. The court heard arguments over whether the footage's origin, handling, integrity and chain of evidence had been properly established. Judge Cassim Moosa ruled that the CCTV footage could not be played until its authenticity was proven, although the state made it clear that it had not abandoned the video evidence. Matlala and his four co-accused — Musa Kekana, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, Tsakani Matlala and Nthabiseng Zandile Nzama — have pleaded not guilty to 25 charges. The charges include attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder, money laundering, fraud and the illegal possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition. The state alleges that the accused are linked to three alleged attacks between 2022 and 2024. This is a developing court case, and all accused remain presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
