16 km to Iceland’s Hidden Hot Springs | Kárahnjúkar Dam & Laugavellir

🏔️ *Poilsio diena Highlanderis stiliumi: Kárahnjúkar užtvanka, 16 km pėsčiomis ir Laugavellir karštosios versmės* Šiandien daliai komandos buvo tokia patirtis, kuri atmintyje išliks ilgam. Viskas prasidėjo nuo kelionės aplankyti *Kárahnjúkar užtvanką* - vieną įspūdingiausių inžinerinių objektų Islandijoje. Tai didžiulė hidroelektrinės sistemos dalis, pastatyta 2006-2010 metais. Ji pakeitė visos vietovės vandens tėkmę: anksčiau ledyninė Jökulsá upė tekėjo savo vaga link jūros, o dabar didelė vandens dalis nukreipiama per tunelius į hidroelektrinę. Vien jau stovint prie tokio mastelio statinio supranti, kokia galinga čia susitinka gamta ir žmogaus inžinerija. Po užtvankos judėjome toliau - link *Laugavellir* karštųjų versmių. Dalį kelio dar pavyko nuvažiuoti automobiliu, bet tada kelias baigėsi ir prasidėjo mūsų „poilsio dienos“ dalis pėsčiomis. Nei daug, nei mažai - apie **8 km į vieną pusę ir 8 km atgal**. 😅 Bet buvo verta kiekvieno žingsnio. *Laugavellir* - viena iš tų vietų, kurias sunku pilnai perteikti net objektyvo pagalba. Kadrai gražūs, bet realybėje viskas atrodo dar stipriau: atšiaurios aukštumos, žalia geoterminė augmenija, karštosios versmės, krioklys ir tokia tyla, kurią gali pajusti tik būdamas ten. Ši vieta ypatinga ir savo geotermine veikla. Vanduo čia kyla iš žematemperatūrės geoterminės sistemos, susijusios su *Kverkfjöll vulkanine zona**. Daugumos versmių temperatūra paprastai nesiekia 40 °C, bet šiame slėnyje yra užfiksuota net **70 °C* temperatūra. Laugavellir turi ir savo istoriją. Kadaise čia bandė gyventi žmonės - atokiai, aukštikalnėse, toli nuo lengvo gyvenimo. Šiandien tai viena iš tų vietų, kuri primena, kokia Islandija gali būti laukinė, graži ir kartu labai stipri. Bet čia juk **Highlanderis**. Mums viskas atrodo čia pat - nesvarbu, ar tai būtų už 100 metrų, ar už 8 kilometrų. 😅 Poilsio diena? Galbūt. Bet tikrai tokia, kurios greitai nepamiršime. Tikros vietos. Tikri kilometrai. Tikros istorijos. --- 🏔️ *A Highlanderis-style rest day: Kárahnjúkar Dam, 16 km on foot, and the Laugavellir hot springs* Today, part of the team had an experience that will stay in memory for a long time. It all started with a trip to visit *Kárahnjúkar Dam* - one of the most impressive engineering structures in Iceland. It is a major part of the hydroelectric power system, built between 2006 and 2010. The project changed the water flow of the whole area: before the power plant, the glacial Jökulsá River followed its natural course towards the sea, while today a large part of the water is diverted through tunnels to the hydroelectric station. Standing next to a structure of this scale, you really feel where raw nature and human engineering meet. After the dam, we continued towards the *Laugavellir* hot springs. We managed to drive part of the way, but then the road ended and our “rest day” continued on foot. Around **8 km one way and 8 km back**. 😅 But it was worth every step. *Laugavellir* is one of those places that is hard to fully capture even through a camera lens. The footage may look beautiful, but reality feels even stronger: harsh highlands, green geothermal vegetation, hot springs, a waterfall, and a kind of silence you can only understand when you are there. This place is also special because of its geothermal activity. The water comes from a low-temperature geothermal system connected to the *Kverkfjöll volcanic zone**. Most springs here are usually below 40 °C, but a temperature of **70 °C* has been recorded in this valley. Laugavellir also carries its own history. People once tried to live here - remotely, in the highlands, far from an easy life. Today, it is one of those places that reminds you how wild, beautiful, and powerful Iceland can be. But this is **Highlanderis**. To us, everything feels close - whether it is 100 metres away or 8 kilometres away. 😅 A rest day? Maybe. But definitely one we will not forget anytime soon. Real places.
