Anger Erupts in Valencia as Protesters Clash With Riot Police

Tens of thousands of Spaniards marched in the eastern city of Valencia on Saturday, demanding the resignation of regional president Carlos Mazón over his handling of last week’s deadly floods. A group of angry protesters clashed with riot police outside Valencia’s city hall towards the end of the demonstrations. Police used batons to push the group back. Many marchers held signs reading “Mazón Resign!” while others carried messages like “You Killed Us!” At the government building, some protesters smeared mud on its walls, leaving handprints across the walls. Mazón, who leads the region’s emergency response, is facing mounting pressure after his administration sent flood alerts to citizens’ phones hours after the flooding began. The floods devastated the Valencia region and left thousands displaced from their homes. Streets remain covered in mud and debris.
