What is the closest galaxy to the Milky Way? Most people confidently answer Andromeda - and most people are wrong. Andromeda sits two and a half million light-years away, but dozens of smaller galaxies orbit far, far closer to us. The Sagittarius Dwarf is being torn apart just seventy thousand light-years from Earth right now. The Large Magellanic Cloud drifts one hundred and sixty-three thousand light-years away. Ultra-faint dwarf galaxies like Segue One hide almost within our own halo. So why do we still call Andromeda the closest? And more importantly - even with the friendliest possible definition, could any human ever actually reach another galaxy?
