SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won stated that the surge in semiconductor demand has accelerated the formulation of plans for the post-construction phase of the SK Hynix Yongin Cluster semiconductor plant, and announced plans to review potential locations while keeping open possibilities for both domestic and overseas sites. Meeting with reporters after attending a dialogue at the Nikkei Forum's "Korea-Japan Special Session" held at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo on the 9th, Chairman Chey responded to a question regarding the location of the next plant following the completion of the fourth phase of the Yongin Cluster semiconductor plant by saying, "As semiconductor demand continues to rise, we cannot avoid moving somewhere, and preparation is becoming a task." He also hinted that building a plant abroad could be an option, stating, "It may not necessarily be the case that we will build only in Korea." Chairman Chey particularly emphasized, "If we intend to move [the plant] somewhere, enormous infrastructure is required," adding, "Power, land, people, and water must all be in place." Chairman Chey’s remarks are drawing attention in conjunction with recent reports that political circles are considering plans for Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to expand their semiconductor facility investments into the Honam and Chungcheong regions. This comes amidst speculation that measures are being sought for the semiconductor industry to play a role in balanced regional development, such as President Lee Jae-myung announcing at his recent press conference marking his first anniversary in office that he would soon unveil a large-scale investment project to bring about a major shift in growth strategy. However, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix stated that they "have no knowledge" regarding discussions with the government and drew a line regarding the possibility of regional investment, stating that "nothing has been decided." Chairman Chey also hinted that the company is conducting a multi-faceted review of semiconductor factory locations, stating, "If we believe that customers or other countries will bring us significant benefits, we can make demands, and how we respond to those demands is also a matter of our capability. There is also a need to ensure the minimum satisfaction of stakeholders." He added, "We will make a decision on where and how to build it after comprehensive consideration. For now, we are focusing on building the Yongin Cluster."
